Why Have an Eye Exam?
It is important to have regular eye exams so that your optician can not only determine the prescription for your glasses, but also check the health of your eyes. Furthermore, our eyes are a great indicator of the general health of our bodies and your optician will check for any unseen signs of illness.

Here are four great reasons to schedule a comprehensive eye examination:
1. Vision Check
It is essential that you have your prescription checked on a regular basis, as it common for prescriptions to change over time. Annoying headaches or eye fatigue are often a sign that your prescription needs to be updated. In addition, if you are a regular computer user, you may develop symptoms such as headaches, dry eyes, double vision, blurred vision and neck and shoulder pains which can be treated with eyeglasses made specifically for working on a computer.
2. Detection of Eye Disease
Many serious eye diseases often have no symptoms. Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes vision loss but 50% of damage could have occurred before it presents with symptoms. Conditions such as macular degeneration or cataracts develop so gradually that you may not even realize your vision has decreased. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that may develop in diabetic patients. Early detection of these and other eye diseases is important for maintaining healthy vision.
3. Developmental Problems
It is important to get your child’s vision checked from a young age. If there is a vision problem and it goes uncorrected this can often cause learning and reading difficulties or contribute to other medical problems such as dyslexia and visual stress. Uncorrected vision in children can often cause amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye turn) and if not corrected early enough, can lead to permanent vision loss.
4. Eye Fashion Trends
The primary reason for visiting your optometrist should always be eye health, but there is nothing wrong with having a little fun. At Vitality Optical Care we offer the latest fashions and quality eyewear, as well as scratch-resistant and anti-reflective coatings. If you haven’t updated your glasses in a while, you may be pleasantly surprised at the many options available to you today. It is important to protect your eyes from UV light and hence sunglasses are a must for healthy eyes.
In Scotland, everyone is entitled to a 2 yearly free eye examination as well as some money towards the cost of glasses if you fall into an entitlement category. If you feel that your vision has changed, or there is a problem with either of your eyes, then supplementary eye checks within the 2 year period are also covered by the NHS.
If you are an individual that falls into any of the groups below you are entitled to annual eye examinations:
- under 16
- over 60
- Diabetic
- Over the age of 40 and have a close family member with Glaucoma
