In an age where technology is constantly advancing and is incorporated into most of our lives on a daily basis, in some way or another, it makes sense that the latest innovative trend is wearable technology. Think “smart watches”; the fusion of software and accessories to provide a greater ease of use during everyday activities.
Google have taken a further step down the revolutionary road and introduced Google Glass. Google Glass is a wearable computer with a Heads Up Display (HUD), a camera, and the capability to interact with the user through voice recognition and a series of swipes or taps. Appearing to look like a simple pair of rimless glasses, Google Glass can take photos, capture video, search the internet, send and receive messages and display directions, all hands free. The tiny 0.5 inch display sits just above your right eye, bringing the power of your smartphone out of your pocket and into your peripheral vision.
How can such a device be used in the Dentistry field? Here at Vitality Dental and Optical Care, remarkable new software is being developed that will revolutionise the world of dentistry. Our vision is that dental practices of all sizes will incorporate Google Glass in the everyday running of their practice, to provide optimal training material, increase the productivity and efficiency of their business while implementing the highest standard of patient care. Research and development is currently being undertaken here at Vitality Dental and Optical Care, with our dedicated team of Dentists and staff acting as researchers for the project.
Google glass will provide quick in-office communication; dentists and reception staff can exchange messages through glass. Patient confidentiality is not an issue as only the dentist can see the message on the screen, and all he has to do is simply reply via voice command.
Dentists will be able to take advantage of Glass’ ability to capture photos and videos for educational and training purposes. Instead of using up valuable time writing down patient’s notes, the dentist can focus solely on his patient and refer back to images or videos Glass has recorded during the examination when he comes to document his findings. This provides a greater patient experience as the dentists attention is constantly on them.
Vitality dental and optical is now working hand in hand with Google Glass in creating the tools to revolutionise the way dentists work around the world. Our dentists and front of house team are now equipped with Google Glass for research and software development purposes. Our goal is that Dentist and staff using Google Glass will have access to patient’s medical history, radiographs, periodontal charts and everything else they might need during treatment without the need of a computer screen. Not only will this provide ease of access to information for dentists while improving patient care but it will also diminish cross contamination fears.
